A criminal defence lawyer will represent the person who has been accused of a crime, advising that individual on legal matters, and assisting in the area of legal documentation such as a will, contracts etc. in cases of indigence they can also work as public defenders. A highly experienced criminal defence lawyer should be able to effectively interrogate the witnesses of the prosecution in order to prove the innocence of the client.
In certain extreme situations, a criminal lawyer may negotiate with the lawyer of the prosecution in order to mete out punishments and charges in a more equitable fashion. The prosecutors are working on behalf of the government in the proceedings. Whether it’s the prosecution or defence, both lawyers will be able to use government statistics and other documentation at any stage throughout the court case. Each state has its own laws governing criminal lawyers, but a basic code law is applicable throughout the whole country.
