Largest city in Turkey

Adana is the 5th largest city in Turkey (after Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Bursa). As of 2006, Adana had an estimated population of 1,271,894.

The city is known for its rich history (going back 3,000 years, and linked to the ancient city of Tarsus). Famous buildings in the area include:

- The Stone Bridge of Adana (Turkish: Tasköprü) which spans the Seyhan River. This bridge was originally built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, but has been damaged by earthquakes many times over the centuries, and repaired - including during the reign of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century, the Umayyad caliph al-Walid II during the 7th century, and the caliph al-Mu'tasim during the 8th century.

Turkey as a Holiday destination

As one of the world's most culturally unique holiday destinations, it's hard to pin down Turkey into any specific continental camp. On one hand, it's strongly rooted in its Middle Eastern origins and still basks in its rich Ottoman heritage. On the other, Turkey is a fiercely modern, secular state that bridges the divide between Europe and Asia with ease. However, the only real way to evaluate this intriguing country's significance to the modern world is to visit - and any holiday in Turkey is guaranteed to be an unforgettable one.

CONCLUSION

If fun in the sun is what you're after, make sure that you spend some time on the "Turkish Riviera". The Turkish Riviera is the name used to denote Turkey's Antalya Province and Mugla provinces, and offers tourists several hundred kilometres of sandy beaches and sparkling blue waters.
