A tooth ache is one of the leading causes for having a sleepless night or an emergency visit to the dentist.  The pain can be downright unbearable, especially if you have let the pain linger without treating it.  There are various types of a pain that are associated with an infected tooth.  Those that are mild or not very painful are usually caused by eating a food that is too cold for your sensitive teeth.  However, if the tooth ache is extremely painful then it is probably caused by lingering germs that have infected the tooth or a cavity. Some of these germs can actually enter your blood stream if you have bleeding in your mouth. This can lead to plaque build-up inside your arteries.

Your dentist is the best person to contact in the event of a tooth ache.  They can prescribe a stronger medication, than the treatments that are available over the counter.  Many times, if your jaw is swollen or you have a fever, then they will prescribe an effective antibiotic.  This will treat the tooth even after the pain is gone.  They can also prescribe a pain medication that you can use at a later date if you were to have another tooth pain.

If you are susceptible to tooth ache pain quite frequently, or if you feel an extreme tooth pain coming on, then you should consume foods that contain alkalis.  Foods that have alkalis include un-boiled milk, fruit, and green vegetables.  Food that contains a large amount of calcium, such as dates, tomatoes, cabbage, cucumber and carrots will keep your teeth strong and healthy.  Foods that have a large amount of Vitamin C, like oranges or lemons, are also effective in tooth ache relief.  To eliminate swollen gums until you can make it to the dentist, try using steam as an alternative treatment.
