Introduction to tea tree oil

Tea tree oil was found to be 93% effective against killing adult lice and 83% effective in killing their eggs. It is generally safe and is one of the only essential oils that can be used neat (undiluted) on the skin (in small amounts.) Tea tree oil can be used on children as young as one year old. Tea tree oil is so versatile that it should be on hand in every household. Having it on hand for other uses will prevent having to search for ingredients when dealing with a lice infestation that requires prompt action.

Some uses of Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is a natural cleaner because of its solvent properties and can be useful in controlling mold growth. Nowadays tea tree oil can be found in many consumer products like soaps, shampoos, toothpastes, hair conditioners, cosmetics, and believe it or not toothpicks. Tea tree oil is well known to be a natural antiseptic and fungicide. People use it on minor cuts and abrasions. It is also useful for many types of skin conditions including athlete's feet, cold sores, nail infections, and head lice.

History of Tea tree oil

What is tea tree oil? Its Latin name is Melaleuca alternifolia and it comes from a tree. Melaleuca trees are native to Australia although they are now also propagated in California. The common name 'tea tree' was given when British explorers used the leaves to brew tea.

t's antiseptic use has been in existence for hundreds of years, but has only recently been scientifically studied (starting in 1929). The 'official' studying of tea tree oil led to ever increasing interest. Tea tree oil was even supplied in first aid kits to soldiers in the Australian army.

How to use Tea tree oil

Tea tree oil is only used on the skin. It should never be taken internally, as it can be very toxic to the liver if ingested. If using a toothpaste with tea tree oil, take extra care not to swallow any of the toothpaste and is not recommended for children. Although tea tree oil can be used neat on the skin, it is best used in dilution to prevent sensitivity from occurring.

How Tea tree oil is produced

Firstly, tea tree oil is produced through steam distillation of the trees leaves. This process leaves you with a very pure essential oil. One of the tea tree oil uses is for acne. The normal, prescribed treatment for acne is 5% benzoyl peroxide creams or lotions. There have been many studies conducted, which show tea tree oil is just as effective, although it might take a little bit longer. So, if you are looking for an all natural way to help relieve acne, then try tea tree oil.

CONCLUSION

Dandruff is another condition tea tree can help with. You can either buy shampoo already with tea tree oil in it, or you can buy the pure essential oil and just add it to your own shampoo. I would recommend buying an all natural shampoo with tea tree oil in it
