Using Ethernet Controllers for Your High Speed Internet Connection

Most people should have some idea of what an Ethernet controller. This network interface is what your computer will use to connect you to the internet. People who are fed up with slow internet speeds are now opting for something much faster. The Ethernet control is now one of the most popular interfaces used to access the internet today. It replaced AppleTalk and Token Ring of yesteryears. Because of how popular it is, you will find that most computers come with an Ethernet interface built in.

However, it is possible for you to purchase an add-in Ethernet controller from the many developers out there. If the computer you purchased did not come featured with one, then you may decide to purchase one developed by Linksys, 3Com or D-Link. It’s also possible for you to have more than one in your computer and for you to use that system as a gateway or router. On every controller you will find an address. It’s basically 6 octets; the first three numbers are the ID number of the manufacturers.

Before we witnessed the introduction of Ethernet controllers, you could only purchase a select few computers that had Ethernet built in. They were Digital, Sun and IBM. It wasn’t until we reached the 1990s, that networking started to grow in popularity and we started to see a rapid increase in high speed Ethernet. The first versions ran at 10Mbit using 10BASE-T specifications. Today, using a Gigabit Ethernet it’s possible to get speeds of up to 100Mbits and higher. Even though these speeds are possible, it’s very rarely that you get a connection that fast, as it’s the slowest connection on the network that determine the speed. So you will only be able to achieve the speeds that your cable, DSL or other connection-type allows.
