About Spades

According to noted bridge author George Coffin, the game of Spades was introduced in Cincinnati, Ohio sometime between 1937 and 1939.It is believed, due to game-play similarities, that Spades is a descendant from the game Whist. Until recently, Spades has been relatively unknown in areas outside of the United States except in a few places where American troops have been stationed.

However, due to the recent and immense influence of the Internet, Spades popularity has drastically risen and the game has spread internationally in the form of online card rooms and tournaments.

Playing spades

The player at dealer's left leads but cannot lead a spade (trump) for the first trick. The play moves clockwise. You must follow (match) the suit led. If you cannot follow suit, play any card. You do not have to play a trump unless it is the led suit.

The highest card of the led suit wins the trick unless a spade trumps the trick. If more than one trump is played in a trick, the highest trump wins. If spades are not the led suit, a spade can be played only if the player has no cards in the led suit. A spade cannot be led until a spade has "trumped" an earlier trick of a different suit or when only spades are left in the hand. The winner of a trick leads to the next trick.

CONCLUSION

The basic game is partnership.  Spades is played with four players. Your partner sits opposite you. What affects you affects your partner. You must play as a team. All 52 cards are dealt - 13 to each player. There are 13 tricks to take in each round. Count the bid if you are the last to bid, to make sure all the bids, including yours, do not exceed 13.

Each player looks at his hand and decides how many tricks he thinks he will make. Spades are always trumps, but can only be led once any player has cut a card in any suit in which he has none.A Spade card always takes the trick unless a higher Spade is played.Spades can also be led for the first time if a player has no other suit to lead.
