Alcoholic smoker
Treatment of alcoholic smokers has not been addressed in a notable way. It is often considered impossible to make people abstain from consuming alcohol and also avoid smoking tobacco. However, recent experiments have shown contradictory results against this belief.
Treating alcoholic smokers with a history of depressive disorders has been found to be more difficult than subjects without any such history. During the treatment, subjects end up smoking surreptitiously so as to satisfy their desire to smoke. Hence, a lot of research and modifications have to be done in patients undergoing treatment for addiction to alcohol and tobacco.
Smokers statistics
The Columbia University report found that smokers ages 12 to 17 are also more likely to meet the diagnostic definition for drug abuse or dependence than nonsmokers, at 26 percent compared to 2 percent - a huge difference that is carried forward into adulthood. The numbers of adult addicts in drug rehab programs who are also smokers far outnumber the nonsmokers, according to a report earlier this year.
There are more than 50 million of regular cigarette smokers in the United States alone. These people spend more than $15 billion annually to sustain their habit and about $5 billion goes to the government for taxes. There is an increasing incidence of cigarette smoking through the years. It was estimated that during 1910, every smoker above the age of eighteen consumed cigarettes at a rate of 144 per year. By 1963, the number of cigarettes a smoker smoked increased to a staggering 4,346 per year.
Smokers and wrinkles
Here's another good reason to quit smoking. Researchers at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor's dermatology clinic found that smoking may increase wrinkles at parts of the body other than the face – even on areas that are covered with clothes!
CONCLUSION
Smokers are 5 times more likely to suffer from a heart attack in their 30’s and 40’s than non-smokers. Smoking related illness kill 40% of smokers before they reach retirement. Quitting smoking is the most powerful health measure a smoker can take. Risk is directly associated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day.
