Registering edu Domains
You can easily register a domain name such as a .net, .com or .org. the same is not true if you want an edu extension though. Registering an edu domain takes more than just finding a domain name. These domains are not freely available through the avenues they can be registered at.
If the domain ends in edu, it needs to have some education significance and be a not for profits organization, usually set up for higher education or information technology reasons. Educause have been awarded the responsibility of handing out edu domains since 2001. To get one you have to be accredited by one of the institutions that qualify for one in the US.
Google in particular gives special weight to websites that have backlinks coming from edu websites. This is mainly because they understand that it is not easy to get and edu domain to verify you links to them. Getting verification is harder than on most other websites. Sites that are educational in nature also hold great credibility.
All of what has been discussed here is similar to .gov extensions also, so you should keep this in mind. The dotgov.gov is responsible for give people these domains.
