The Case against Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery

Some years ago, when having a facelift wasn’t so common, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the use of surgical procedures to improve one’s appearance. The few movie stars in the 50s and 60s that did have work done on themselves were very reluctant about revealing it to anyone.

Today, plastic surgery is rather normal and very common in our society. It isn’t unusual for families to have a brother, mother or sister who has had either a quick botox injection or a facelift. Surprisingly, in places like South Korea, it’s not uncommon for parents to give their child plastic surgery as a gift to them on their birthday.

There are so many reality television shows around today that promote having plastic surgery. Shows such as ‘Extreme Makeover’ encourage people to focus on their outer appearance by creating the impression that your whole life can be immediately altered if you work on the way you look.

Not so long ago, if a woman or girl who had entered a beauty pageant, had surgery on their face in order to enhance their overall look, it would be frowned upon. Back in those days, people liked women to look more natural. Today, it’s not uncommon for the beauty pageant winner to have had multiple procedures performed on her.

However, with plastic surgery experiencing rapid growth, there are a growing number of people who are unscrupulous, willing to exploit this opportunity, by taking advantage of vulnerable people. The end result is that major complications and death rates have increased. Therefore, it’s very important that the plastic surgeon you choose has a board certification. A board member is a doctor who has at least six years of training and an additional three years of practice. This way you can be sure that you will receive the best treatment with the best possible outcome.
