Monopoly introduction
The Monopoly board is actually designed after the city of Atlantic City in New Jersey. That design hasn't changed in all the years since the game has come out. Yes, there have been collectible variations of the game replacing the street names with characters and places from a variety of TV shows and movies, but the original Monopoly game itself has stayed the same all these years.
Because of the slow build up of the game, Monopoly games can last for hours or even days. The longest Monopoly game on record lasted 70 days.
Monopoly themes
When it comes to themes, there's a Monopoly game for virtually everyone. Star Wars and Lord of the Rings Monopoly themes appeal to the sci-fi crowd, while the NFL and Dale Earnhardt Monopoly editions are a sure bet for sports aficionados. Those who love nostalgia will enjoy playing the I Love Lucy version of Monopoly, while kids of all ages enjoy the Pokemon, Spider-Man, and Disney Monopoly editions. Other themes include Harley-Davidson, The Simpsons, Scooby-Doo, and Peanuts - and there's even a .com version!
Monopoly defined
Monopoly is a board game published by parkers brothers, an imprint of hasbro. Players compete to acquire wealth through stylized economic activity involving the buying, rental and trading of properies using play money, as players take turns moving around the board according to the roll of the dice. The game is named after the economic concept of monopoly, the domination of a market by a single provider.
Monopoly history
In 1974, Ralph Anspach, a San Francisco State University economics professor, invented Anti-Monopoly®, a game in which players break up big business monopolies. After having his game turned down by all the established game companies, Anspach set up a family-size company, published the game on his own, and it became an instant best seller.
CONCLUSION
Monopoly has a complex history. It was based on The Landlord's Game (1904), designed and patented by Elizabeth Magie.
The goal of the game is to force all of the other
players into bankruptcy by buying real estate, building houses and hotels, and charging rent.
The influence of Monopoly can be seen in game collections and retail stores all over the world -- more than 200 million games have been sold worldwide, and it's been been published in 26 languages. By my estimation, it's also the most copied (both authorized and unauthorized) game published since 1800. Monopoly clones pop up all the time, and are widely available.
