Theme day and jousting

As the day develops, everyone is involved in an archery battle, where the battle of Agincourt is (sort of) re-enacted. The day is given a real sense of direction by the jousting finale. In the jousting, each team's best knight competes for the championship - on horses propelled by the other team members. Great fun indeed!

Simonetta and jousting

Once nominated "The Queen of Beauty" at a Florentine jousting tournament, it was Simonetta's face that Botticelli painted on an art banner that was carried into battle by the tournament winner, Giuliano de' Medici, a man soon to become her lover. Inscribed beneath her image, Botticelli described her as "the unparalleled one.

Types of jousting

They came in many variations and the most common type of polearm is the lance, which is still used today in jousting competitions. The lance was also a capable, and feared, weapon used for breaking up the foot ranks of enemy formations. Other types of polearms were often variations of hand-held weapons mounted on the end of a long pole.

Origins of Fasnacht and Jousting

The origins of Fasnacht are somewhat obscure and unsure, largely because a huge earthquake in 1356 destroyed large parts of Basel along with many written records. Historians believe that the festival came about due to a row at a jousting tournament been the citizens of Basel and some knights. The argument is said to have tuned nasty, with the locals chasing the knights out of town and killing four of them in the process.

CONCLUSION

Jousting is a sport that consists of martial competition between two mounted knights using a variety of weapons, usually in sets of three per weapon (such as tilting with a lance, blows with the battle axe, strokes with the daggers, or strokes with a sword), often as part of a tournament. Jousting was just one of a number of popular martial games in the Middle ages referred to generically as hastiludes.
