John Lewis leased a shop. At 28 he had 14 years` experience in the drapery trade, working as a buyer at Peter Robinson. He began selling ribbons and haberdashery and in 1870, expanded into linens.
In addition to selling haberdashery and linens, John Lewis was also an `outfitter, upholsterer, furrier, a dealer in china, glass, cutlery, plate and ironmongery and an importer of oriental fabrics`.
In 1928, at the age of 92, John Lewis died and, as Oswald had withdrawn from the business in 1926, the management of both shops devolved entirely to Spedan Lewis.

New John Lewis department stores opened in Bluewater, Kent, and in Glasgow in March 1999. John Lewis made its debut in the West Midlands in September 2001 with a department store in Solihull's new town-centre shopping development, Touchwood. In addition, John Lewis Bristol relocated to a new site at Cribbs Causeway regional shopping centre near the M5 in March 1998 and Tyrrell and Green, its Southampton department store, closed on 23 September 2000 to be reborn on 28 September 2000 as John Lewis Southampton, anchoring the new WestQuay shopping centre.
