Finding a Job as an Accountant

After a student has graduated from university with a degree in accounting, he or she will have a number of choices and career paths to choose from. A lot of business skills are required for those who would like to work as an accountant, which is why companies tend to employ people who have a degree in accountancy. If you have graduated with a degree in accounting, then you should be able to apply wherever you like. Some of the areas that you may choose to work in are tax, audit and management accounting. The best thing for you to do would be to apply for the job that you feel you are best at and that interests you the most. Some career paths may be better for you than others, so you should apply for a job in those areas for maximise your career prospects.

If public accounting is something that you are good at, the entry level positions that will best suit your skill level are staff auditor, tax staff and consulting services. After you have finished your daily duties you would be expected to report to a senior. After you have at least 3 to 6 years working in this area, you should then consider working for a higher job position. These types of jobs would require you to report to your manager quite frequently. After 6 years, you may want to apply for a partner or senior partner position.

If corporate accounting is your strength, then having in excess of 3 years experience could land you with a job as a tax accountant, internal auditor, management and financial accountant. Once you have completed anywhere from 3 to 6 years of work in this field, you should then be ready to apply for a higher position. After you have spent the past 6 years striving to become the best you possibly can, you want to pursue job positions such as internal audit manager, tax manager and financial accounting manager.
