Pros and Cons of a Career as an Accountant
If numbers is your thing, then working as an accountant is something that you probably already have considered. Accounting is made up of a number of fields which can all take you down different career paths. Whether you believe it or not, there are many pros and cons to working as an accountant. Here are a few things that you should consider when thinking about pursuing a career in accountancy.
The Cons
1. It’s a very competitive field. Because of the amount of jobs available in this line of work, there are also a lot of people graduating with degrees in accounting. If you decide to pursue a higher degree than your undergraduate degree then it may improve your job prospects over someone who just has an associate’s degree.
2. It’s a fairly conservative field. Although it may not really be a bad thing, it can be a rather bland field to work in.
3. The vast majority of accountants are paid by the hour. This means that you will be required to track the hours that you work. You need to document it and all hours that are billable must be on record.
4. The hours that an accountant works tend to be rather long, so you should consider that when deciding whether or not to become an accountant.
The Pros
1. The job market is very big – This means that there are many opportunities and jobs for those who pursue accountancy.
2. The majority of accountants seek employment at the big firms, which means that you will have many like-minded people around you to work with on a daily basis.
