Introduction to Hotel jobs

In certain places where there is a high volume of visitors, especially tourist destinations like Cancun, Mexico, it can be expected that a large number of hotels and other forms of accommodations are located there. A person who wishes to work in the hotel industry would do well to start in these places, as the hotels can give them the best training and experience in the industry. Before a person starts applying, however, he must first know what to expect with regard to the job descriptions of different hotel personnel so that he is properly guided in his application.

Hotel Management Course

An AHM, associate degree in hotel management, takes around 18 months to complete from a standard hotel or motel management school. After completing this course successfully, graduates with an AHM degree are eligible to work with any large or small company around the world in an entry-level management post with hotels, motels, and restaurants. Hotel management students will have communications, general studies, and English as their combination subjects while taking up a business course in hotel management. Most hotel management schools also provide hands-on experience and practical projects for their students.

Hotel manager responsibilities

Managers are responsible for every aspect of the hotel, including customer service, food quality, catering, and hotel supplies. The manager also looks after the scheduling and conference planning, valet and transportation services and all other special services provided to the esteemed guests and visitors.

Therefore, the manager has a key role and responsibility in keeping up to the name and reputation of the hotel or motel by managing the rest of the staff efficiently. The responsibility of hiring, training, and supervising other members of the staff is given to an assistant manager who co-ordinates with the general manager. He also schedules working shifts and assigns duties to his subordinates. Writing reports, negotiating with the vendors, and coordinating various events also come under the supervision of assistant managers.

The right priorities in your hotel job

It's important not to let your sense of self-importance swell once you become a hotel manager, warns Glover. "I have a normal sized ego, I'm adaptable to new techniques and I still see each day as a learning experience." As far as what it takes to succeed, Glover insists that to become a hotel manager -- and a good one -- you must be a people person.

"Surely the technical side of it is important, but this is a people business -- you serve people, you manage people, you listen to people, you solve people's problems, you try to attract more people to your hotels than the guy down the street. It ain't rocket science -- it's all about people and getting along with them!" he insists.

CONCLUSION

So, if you aspire to become a hotel manager or work in a hotel -- study hard, don't forget where you came from once you get there, and never disregard the importance of the people working under you -- and you'll be on your way to success.
