Importance of History

Can anything worthwhile be gained from continued research into historical events?
History seen as study of the past is an integral part of many education systems across the world. Many countries spend huge amounts of money and resources to uncover their past. Every year new and new historical sites are uncovered, excavations on those sites are conducted and the result are studied by archeologists throughout the world. But have we gained anything worthwhile from research into the past? The answer seems clear: Yes, we have.

Nursing History

Many organizations preserve evidence of the history of nursing. The American Association for the History of Nursing (AAHN) and The Museum of Nursing History are two of them. These organizations help nurses to know about pioneers in nursing history and their efforts. They also help people to foster the importance of history for a better understanding of the past, defining the present, and redefining the future of nursing.

Formerly female nurses were also known as "Sisters" and considered to be devotees towards serving other's lives. Nursing history is a great tool for today's nurses. It incites and inspires them to serve humankind selflessly while facing the steep and winding path of the health care system bravely.

Why study History

The reason why history is essential and why we should all be passionate about is that history is the account of mankind and not a mere date, dead people, a storyline or a plot of events and places. It is importance to our society as history facilitates our understanding of people and societies. As the past created the present, history ameliorates our understanding of that change and how the civilisation and the world we live in came to exist. History is important so that we do not repeat the mistakes of the past.

History of Athens

The history of Athens is virtually the history of Greece, for this immortal city was for centuries the heart of the Hellenic world and the acknowledged leader of its civilization. Though in common with all Greek cities, its origins are too remote to be anything more than a matter for conjecture. The Cyclopean wall that runs round the rock of the Acropolis, the neolithic remains, traces of Bronze Age habitation and a number of pre-Hellenic place-names prove that Athens was occupied by man from the very earliest times.

CONCLUSION

Sadly, however, people are generally loathe to rely on "history", often dismissing the "historical data" as outdated, unreliable and irrelevant. It is the duty of historians to place the historical facts in the correct context, express any constraints and assumptions, draw conclusions and present practical "modern" applications. Only then will history be taken seriously as a tool for planning our social and economic future.
