The Technology Ahead For Broadband Internet

Broadband internet connectivity or what is simply referred to as “broadband” is basically high speed internet access, significantly faster than its dialup counterpart. A dialup modem has a maximum download rate of 56 Kbps and must have full use over your telephone line to do so; while broadband technology is able to supply several times this speed without causing any disruption to your telephone line.

Even though you will find that many minimum speeds have been used in order to define broadband, this may range from as low as 64 Kbps to as high as 1.0 Mbps, the OCED report will typically only count the download speeds which are faster than or equal to 256 Kbps. The maximum download is what is commonly used to define the speed of a connection, which is fortunate for ADSL broadband lines, as they are “asymmetric”, which means their upload speed is significantly slower than their download speed.

High speed internet is a common term used to describe broadband internet, as its rate of transfer is typically very high. Basically, any connection speed that is equal to or more than 256 Kbps is considered a broadband line. According to the ITUSS (International Telecommunication Union Standardisation Sector), a broadband line can be described as a connection line that has a transmission capacity which exceeds that of a primary rate ISDN connection.

In most cases you will find that the bandwidth that is advertised is not what is accessible to you as the customer, this is generally because internet service providers will have more subscribers than their backbone connection is able to handle, which is something that is considered under the assumption that most of their subscribers will not be using the full capacity of their connection.
