Laser engraving history: It was in the early sixties that scientists first discovered they could create a light source, focus its energy and have a tool powerful enough to affect a wide range of materials. You can think of a laser as a light source that's similar to a light bulb. A light bulb will emit energy all around it. . This beam can either vaporize a small area of the surface called laser engraving or cause a change in surface color of the material called laser marking.

The laser engraving industry is relatively new. When lasers appeared on the market it didn't take long for the engraving industry to discover that lasers could be used for a wide variety of industrial applications including welding, heat-treating, etching and engraving. For the engraving industry, CO2 lasers, named for the gasses used to create the light source, are the tools of choice. It didn't take long for the engraving industry to notice lasers and soon they were being used for a wide variety of industrial applications including welding, heat-treating, etching and engraving.

Engraving methods

One of the ways is by hand engraving where an expert will use a hand tool to engrave the words in the metal. Another process is of course through the use of the engraving machine. Unlike the hand-made engraving process, this is much faster and more precise. Mistakes are minimized and the letters appear crisp. One disadvantage of using the engraving machine is the fact that one can only put up to 20 characters only.
