How does DSL work?

This means that frequencies available for data to be transmitted on are divided in order to give the end user more time to connect to the internet at faster speeds while uploading and downloading data.

There are also many other types of DSL services such as VDSL, which operates over a short distance, SDSL, which you will not be able to use your phone line at the same time of using it, but downloading and uploading is often extremely smart, and RADSL where the speed of your connection is automatically adjusted based on the length and quality of your line.
