Cruiserweight Championship
Since its inception in WCW in late 1991, the Cruiserweight Championship has had a roller coaster of an existence. Its first obstacle was overcoming an almost four-year lull when WCW failed to re-establish the championship after stripping Brad Armstrong in 1992. Since that time, several other questionable decisions were made, most notably when both
Lenny Lane and The Artist were stripped of their championships in controversial fashion. In addition to all this, the Cruiserweight Championship also found its way around the waists of the likes of Madusa and Oklahoma. Despite all this, the Cruiserweight Championship has become the highest accolade in cruiserweight wrestling. It is because of the recent efforts of Superstars such as Gregory Helms, Chavo Guerrero and Jamie Noble that the Cruiserweight Championship is held in such high regard.
WCW Cruiser weight
When WCW lost its existence the wrestling community lost a promotion that put on some of the greatest matches in wrestling history. Because of the obsession of paying established stars like Hulk Hogan and Kevin Nash ridiculous amounts of money to be part of WCW fans now remember WCW more for that reason and forget about the volume of classic matches they produced especially in the cruiserweight division division.
Much like TNA with it X- division today WCW's cruiserweight division was what attracted fans that where fed up with the plodding big men of the WWE, but just as TNA are starting to do now WCW ignored the cruiserweights once the big stars started to come and they became of little importance.
A heavy weight champion
Ask any Italian who the greatest boxer ever was, and you will never hear the names Ali, Louis or Sugar. Nope. You will only hear the name Rocky Marciano, the only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated.
To his credit, Rocky Marciano did make a habit of beating up his opponents in the ring. Add the fact that his most notable victory was over his childhood idle, Joe Louis, whom he sent back into retirement. But Joe was well past his prime. He also beat Archie Moore, but he also was already in his early forties. So to the entire nation of Italy and her children I say to you, Rocky Marciano could not beat any of the champions in my Top T.E.N.
CONCLUSION
The cruiserweight class was created by the World Boxing Council in 1979, with a weight limit of 190 pounds. The first match for the title was staged between Marvin Camel and Mate Parlov on Dec. 8 of that year. It ended in a draw, but Camel won the rematch on March 31, 1980 to become the first cruiserweight champion.
The WBA added the division in 1982, the IBF in 1983. The weight division is also known as the junior heavyweight division.
