Checkers the game

Checkers is a game played by two persons, each with twelve pieces, on a checker-board. You can only move forward on the black squares until you reach the king row and then you can move that piece forward and backward. You must take jumps when offered, even if it means you lose two or more pieces in the process.

Playing checkers

Checkers is played on the dark squares only. A piece may move one square at a time, diagonally. If one of your pieces is next to one of your opponent’s pieces and the square beyond it is free, you are required to jump over the opponent’s piece. The opponent’s piece is then removed from the board. It is possible to jump many times in a row with the same piece, capturing several of your opponent’s pieces.

In the beginning, pieces can only move and jump forward. However, if a piece reaches the far end of the board (in the case of the person playing red, the top), then it becomes a king. (In checkers, a king is usually signified by stacking two checkers one on top of the other. In this program, the king has a star on it.) A king is allowed to move and jump diagonally backwards and forwards. Kings can be captured like any other piece.

Checkers in different countries

Checkers on an 8x8 board, is the checkers game played mostly in Great Britain (where it is called draughts), USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and a few other countries. The most popular version of checkers, however is played on a 10x10 board in Eastern Europe. In the USA, that game is sometimes called Polish Checkers. Elsewhere, it is called International Draughts. They are starting to play our game, and we are starting to play their game, due to the efforts of the International Checkers Hall of Fame. There are other 8x8 varieties played in Spain and Italy and elsewhere.

CONCLUSION

Checkers (using the U.S. rules) uses the same board as chess. Many sets comes with the pieces needed to play both games. Many different games can be played using the basic checkers board and pieces. In fact, it's not too hard to come up with your own variants.
