The cardigan has long been a staple item of clothing in the wardrobe of many a woman - but, while cardigans have always been a unisex staple of knitwear, the men's cardigan has recently experienced a fashion resurrection. In fact, the men's cardigan is one of this year's most essential male fashion items.

A Cardigan for you

It seems that just as the old saying goes “there is someone out there for everyone”, there is also a cardigan out there for everybody. The older man will fall in love with a fisherman’s cardigan or maybe a nice wool cardigan for the golf course.

His wife will pop down to the shops in a Marks & Spencer special and as for his children, his daughter will probably be out down the pub in a trendy tight fitting little cardigan from the Gap and his son will be posing down another pub in an expensive Armani number. So as far as looks are concerned, the cardigan has passed the test of time with flying colours.

Positives of the cardigan comeback are that they are comfortable, easy to wear and easily integrate into an established wardrobe. There are several styles out this season to choose from: the classic v-neck cardigan has returned and can be found in a lot of different prints and styles.

It's best to avoid the louder, more complicated patterns as this is a layering item and too much busyness is not a good thing. Also, the knit and type of fabric used is an essential consideration; clean looks can be achieved from polyester, cotton and cashmere which will make the resulting product thin and clingier. Chunkier knits are made from wool and cotton and will accomplish a look that is both comforting and touchable.

Wider leg trouserand a cardigan

Wide leg trousers were made popular by Katharine Hepburn. Katharine enabled women to finally wear men’s style pants. The wide leg trouser is perfect for women with thicker thighs and wider hips. Pair the trousers with a crisp white shirt under a loose cardigan or match it with a sexy wool tank top and tie the cardigan around the shoulders.

CONCLUSION

A cardigan can be worn in place of a jacket if it looks great. A great cardigan fits well and keeps its shape. Don’t wear cardigans to work that are stretched, or just plain worn out.
