Introduction to caravans

We will start with the definition of caravan. A caravan is a group of travelers or merchants banded together and organized for joint support and protection while traveling through unsettled or unfriendly country. Caravan trade, however, is associated with the history of the Middle East as far back as the records of ancient civilizations extend. The caravan trade was very well developed before the idea of sea commerce was ever considered.

History of caravans

The caravans were fundamental for the trade industry to prosper. The caravans worked under the regulation of the Arabian Empire. The Empire controlled their routes and tried to afford them some protection.

The history of the caravan trades people has shown how well organized these groups of people were. The caravans crossed great distances across the unsettled desert trails, with little or no protection from the local governments.

Interior caravan design

The interior caravan layout and fixtures is important. There are a number of things to consider. One is the size of the bed. Double beds in caravans are often smaller than the normal one at home. Sometimes caravan beds are shaped with rounded corners, which means it is extremely difficult to use a fitted sheet.

Similar problems can occur with beds in motorhomes. In campervans, beds can be even bigger than king-size so, again, sheets may be a problem. The choice of single beds versus double beds is personal and is entirely depended on what sleeping arrangements you prefer. Think also about whether you want a fold-up bed, so you can enjoy extra space during the day, and where you want the bed positioned: some travellers prefer an island bed, others are happy for it to be flush against the caravan side.

Caravans have come a long way over the years, and if your memories of touring caravans are cold draughty damp things, you should really take a look at the latest models. Also, if your memories of campsites are of wet damp fields with cold smelly toilet blocks, you should have a look at todays campsite/caravan parks, you will be suprised.

That is the beauty of caravanning and motor caravanning, you can choose to go on a field somewhere with little or no facilities or you can choose to go on to a campsite with full entertainments and high quality facilities. Likewise the caravan or motor home you choose can be basic or luxury depending upon your budget and preference.
