Boa constrictor

Boa constrictor is a catchall term for several species of the reptile snake, some of which are endangered and protected. The two most common sub-species you will find readily available in the pet store are the red-tailed boa and the common boa constrictor.

The lifespan of the average boa is twenty-five to thirty years, so if considering the animal as a pet you need to remember that it is a very long commitment. The average size for a full grown red-tailed boa constrictor is eight to ten feet long with a weight up to fifty pounds. Though generally docile in temperament, you should respect their strength at all times.

Boa Constrictor popularity

Boa constrictors have always been a popular pet snake. Similar to Burmese Pythons in that they are considered a ‘friendly giant’ of the snake world. Luckily though, they do not quite reach the size of Burmese Pythons. Boa constrictors usually average 7-9feet in length, females being the larger of the sizes.

They have been known however to reach 14feet in length, a formidable force for such a large bodied snake. Many sub-species of Boa constrictors are now recognized, most of which are smaller locality variants and should also be considered as good pet snakes. These variations make a good alternative if space is an issue.

Boa constrictor is no surprise

Most locators rarely run across exotic breeds. In all likelihood its because nobody thinks to ask about it. Which is probably a good idea. Apartments seem to hate Ferrets for some reason. Most exotics are caged or live in an aquarium. Normally its not a problem. If you have a ten foot Boa constrictor, I assure you, they will want to know about it.

CONCLUSION

The boa constrictor (Boa constrictor ssp.), red-tailed boa, jibóia (Latin American name) or macajuel (pronounced mah-cah-well) is a species of boa. It represents a rare case of an animal having the same common and scientific name. Though all boa species are constrictors, in that they kill their prey by constriction, only one species is properly called a "boa constrictor."
