Bean Bags Chair

The bean bags chair is a common piece of furniture made from fabric filed with small bits of PVC or styro-foam pellets. These types of chairs were at their most popular in the late 1960s to early 1970s. After a fairly long period of time, their popularity remerged, around the mid 1990s as companies began selling chairs with polyurethane foam bits in them, charging a premium for the extra level of comfort it provides.

In the industry it’s also referred to as EPS or polystyrene. The diameter of the bean bag beads is around 3 – 9mm, but there are also micro-beads which measure in diameter from 1 – 3mm. After several years of use, the beans inside the bean bag chair will become compressed resulting in loss or reduced comfort. But it’s not unheard of to refill the chairs with new beads.

Although at the end of the 1990s the popularity of these chairs had begun to wane, as of the late 2000s, the bean bag chair has made a comeback. This could be contributed primarily to the embrace of retro styling.
