It is not a 100 percent certainty how websites are ranked by search engine. The ranking process basically works by the search engines sending out robots calls spiders to check on websites. The spiders crawl a website and rank it accordingly by counting the amount of links the site actually has.

The links it counts are known as back links, the more of them a spider counts, generally the better this is for your websites rank. The link extensions of site you are linking to can also help.

Basically if a website is credible such as yahoo it is likely to attract more links making it more credible. Links that come from yahoo are very credible for this reason.

The kind of site that a website is linked to is also a factor in search engine rankings. Some even have higher credibility because they have extensions that are hard to get such as .edu, .gov for example.

Sites such as these are seen as very credibly, because qualifications are required in order to get one of these extensions.

Because the qualification for an edu domain is not easy, it makes a link from a site like this more important to search engines.

There has been no official confirmation about the power of edu domains, but they can be seen to hold a lot of authority in searches in the search engines which can give some indication for their importance.

When putting comments on an edu website make sure you comment properly and relevantly so your link is acknowledged.
