Relaxing for the Audition
There are many ways to relax and although helpful, they may all leave our awareness when we step into that audition space. Massage, a good night's sleep, a lucky charm, coffee are some of the things I have heard actors use before an audition to calm their nerves. These may be helpful but they cannot motivate our conscious action, thought and voice.
Audition getting and preparation
If you are called for an audition you will usually be given what are called "sides" or a few pages of a script that you will have to read at the audition. In theater you may also be required to have some kind of monologue ready.
In getting the audition in the first place, you or your agent are going to have to submit a photo and resume to the casting director. Sometimes you'll get an open call where anybody can come down but these are the exception, not the rule. Most auditions are by invitation only.
Taking the right things to the Audition
Be aware of anything that the company requires you to bring to your audition. Many places require an audition fee, letters of recommendation, and photos. If you do need photos, make sure you have them taken in advance and that you have several shots so you can pick the best one for the audition? Being ill prepared for an audition will guarantee that you’ll have to wait around till the next one for your big chance.
Gabriel Byrne Audtion confidence
As Gabriel Byrne, the successful movie actor admits, he was having no luck in auditions until, “one day I walked through a door and got two jobs – two movies on the same day – because I had changed my attitude. I no longer was in awe or fear of the audition process.”
CONCLUSION
Think of your audition like an exam. In an acting audition, for example, the director may award 60% of your marks based on your physical skills (acting, singing, dancing) but the other 40% for the way you deliver yourself in the audition – your ‘Sparkle Factor’.
