You should always get involved in audio engineering for the right reasons how much you get paid, should not be the first thing on your mind, when you first start out. Your first objective should be to get your foot through the door. Remember this a profession that is fill with competition, you can get the edge over the other wannabes if you dont act like a wannabe. This will allow you to stand out from the crowd.
