Atlases
Rand McNally has been making road atlases for a very long time. Word has it that Fred Flintstone used their atlas. They still favor the printed map or atlas and publish a lot of them. Next time you stop at a gas station check by the register, I bet you'll find Rand McNally atlases for sale. Now, having said that, they have excellent e-maps and directions. I find them especially effective for comparing routes with Google or MapQuest as a double check kind of thing.
Atlas ideas
If you're stuck where to start, look at premade maps. There are many resources you can use. An atlas, encyclopedia, or Google Maps will show you real world maps. My own map was conceived after seeing a map of Scotland, it's one big peninsula.
The Atlas and the ocean
The average depth of the oceans is about five times the average elevation of the land. In general, the continents stand about three miles above the ocean floor. According to the National Geographic Atlas, the deepest-known part of the ocean measures 10,924 meters (35,839 feet), in the Marianas Trench near Guam. If the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest (29,141 feet), were to be placed into this trench, it would be covered by over 1.25 miles of water.
Atlas appearance
Some 55 million years ago horses, proboscideans, and artiodactyls (even-toed ungulates or hoofed mammals) first appeared, followed by (38 million years ago) the anthropoids (apes), hogs, deer, and other animals. The mountain ranges of Alps, Pyrenees, Caucasus, and Atlas emerged during this period.
CONCLUSION
An atlas is a the compass for the world there are so many place that an atlas can be obtained if you are looking for one. The Internet has a range of atlases for purchase and for immediate use on line. An atlas has a lot of value if you would like to visualise the world that we are living in. An atlas really does give you another perspertive on earth in general and how big and was it is.
