The accounting industry has witnessed a big transformation in the past few years from being static and stodgy to a new vibrant and diverse field, which encompasses FBI agents to tax advisors, from environmental activists to CPAs. The world of business focus on reliable, strong, honest accounting practices has resulted in a huge spike in the amount of accounting jobs available, with a renewed respect in the field, and positive salary prospects. Here are a few tips that you may want to use to stand out amongst your competition.
1. Be a spreadsheet – You may be surprised to know that the vast majority of accountants have basic to medium level knowledge of Excel. If you know arcane spreadsheet formulas as an accountant, it will put you several steps ahead of your competition. Master Pivot Tables and Excel VLookup until you feel that you are an expert with spreadsheets.
2. Management of time should be a priority – Read up on books and blogs that center around productivity and time management. Try to put those tips into practice, those that center on going to work early and defining what your priorities are for the day. It will totally alter your day and your boss will be able to notice it. By being as focused as you possibly can, you will be able to get more done, leaving you feeling more accomplished at the end of the day.
3. Try to put yourself out there – Identify a role model or try to find a mentor. Try with joining accountant organisations in your local area. Attend network groups. Develop friendships with the people you work with. Continually strive to understand what’s going on in the world, your organisation and the economy.
