Types of Laser Hair Removal lasers used.
Alexandrite long pulse and diode types of lasers are best used on light-colored skin. Nd:YAG long pulse lasers are best and safer on darker skin.
How to qualify for laser hair removal
Laser hair removal is not for everyone.
An absolute requirement is that hair must be darker than the surrounding skin. Also very darkly pigmented people can absorb too much laser energy in their skin so are not ideal candidates.
Laser hair removal works best on pale skin and dark coarse hair. If you fit this profile (i.e. you have light skin and the more coarse and dark the hair), the better the outcome will generally be.
The laser works by being attracted to and targeting the dark pigment, so using an alexandrite or a diode laser on darker skin can make the skin burn or loose pigmentation.
Long pulse Nd:YAG lasers were created to cater to dark-skinned patients,
and they are safer on the skin at settings that actually affect the hair than alexandrite and diode lasers.
Laser hair removal treatment process
Treatment usually given 6-8 times and is spaced out 6-10 weeks. Several treatments are needed so that all the hair in the active growth phase are targeted. About 6-10 weeks after every treatment, more treatment is required to eliminate the hairs that came out of the dormant phase and are now active. After 6-8 treatments or so, patients should experience a lot of hair reduction. Depending on genetics more treatment may be required.
