Often when a website is being created the use of a sitemap can often seem unecessary, and this may be true if it is not set up correctly.

Once you understand the importance of a sitemap it is you can then work on creating one that is going to be of benefit and useful for the growth of your website.

Here are some things to consider about having a sitemap -

For plan navigation of your website a sitemap will basically act as a directory for your website. So if your visitors become lost will on your site, the site map should be set up in such a way that they will know where they are.

Your site map can be used to give the overall theme of you website so that when people land on it they can get an understanding straight away. This will save them time, instead of having to read through your whole site.

Your sitemap is great for optimization purposes, because you sitemap will have all the links to all the pages on your website on it, this is great for the search engines robots when crawling your site, it allows them to index your pages more quickly.

So you can just imagine what will happen whenthe search engines robots land on your sitemap, they will follow all your links and index them in record time. Also remember to put a link on your home page to the site map so that the search engine robots can find your sitemap easily.

The site maps greatest use is ultimately organization and relevance, it gives a complete birds eye view on your website and when ever you add anything it can be easily included after your latest information.

Your sitemap will provide you with a very well organized website, with everything in its right place sorted in order or relevance. You should definitely have a sitemap if you have a site of considerable size.

It is a good practise to have a website that is very easy to use. If you have the best looking website in the world, it doesn’t matter if people find it hard to access the information on it. I will give a few tips that you may or may not want to use.

You should make sure that you have the right font so that people find it easy to read the informatin on your website. If you happen to have big blocks of text on your site, you should make sure that they are easily spaced out.

A common size for text size is 10 pixels using the Verdana font. Although this is a popular text size it can be abit small for some, and may actuall cause them to strain. Increasing font size to 16 pixels is usually a good all round size.

If you have a website with lots of content I.e. up to 1000 articles on your site, you will have to make it easy for people to access them, this can be done by archiving the articles in a manageble way and have a search bar that can search your whole site.

You should be aware that if you have a website that doesn’t load up within 15 seconds you are likely to lose your visitor. So you should be sure to provide your information in a way that it is accessible quickly and easily. You should also do the necessary checks such as if every link is working properly.

The idea is that a mailing list is what keeps a business alive. The are are different ways to build one, the most popular being the download method. Online there is a common saying which is “the money is in the list”.

The great thing about a list is that you have instant contact to a targeted prospects, so everytime you have a new product that interest them, you can send it their way immediately.

A common way of gettin prospects to sign up to your list to offer them a download for exchange of their details, this is some times called an “ethical bribe”.

Let’s look at a big brand like apple.com, when you download there quicktime software and itunes software they ask you to fill in your name and email.

They will usually follow up by sending relevant songs to your inbox.

So because we are not as big as apple “yet” we will have to use a download of less sophistication, but something that is of use to our prsopects, depending on what niche you are in. It should be good enough to make them want to exchange their email and name.

Remember its not enough to put together a cheesy download. If you want qualified prospects, you will need to do the right research and provide something that will allow your lead generator to work properly.

The first thing you have to do get people to opt in to your list is to place your opt in form in a place that it can be seen. You can have it on a seperate page which all your other pages link to or have it visible on all your web pages. This will make it easy for your prospects to find it.

It is also a good idea to spend some time promoting your opt in page. Things you can include on the opt in page are highlighting to your visitors the benefits of the download, if the download is so good that it is self explainatory, you can probably skip this, just don’t forget to add the word “free”.

If you are selling something on your site it can be hard to get people to purchase it, but it can be even harder if they don’t know how to purchase from it. So if you are not aware it is even harder for people to buy what you have if you haven’t made it clear.

No matter how well you have convinced your prospect to buy from you without, them knowing how to it is a waste of time.

The first thing to consider is that people are able to find the order form on your site, easily without any hassle. A good thing to do is write a paragraph that is clear and concise, which actually directs prospects, this should decrease the chances of vistors getting lost.

You can also put links on your website to your order form that are very easy to find. To increase the chance of a sale the use of different payment options is also a good thing to include. Some people might like to buy using paypal, others might like to use their credit card and then there are the cheque senders.

Having all the possible options for a sale will only increase the chances of the sale, what’s the point of selling without having a nice range of payment options. Having a number of options will also improve your merchant crdeibility.

When setting up an ordering process it should be secure, the latest technology is encryption technology, such as SSL. It is also a good idea to always offer a money back guarantee, this makes people feel more comfortable about buying. Contact details are also a must to help reasure customers, for help if they need it after they purchase.

If you have customer testimonials about your product they can be added, as they will help increase customers confidence in you, it will also inspire confidence in you. Make sure all your testimonials are real though.
————

When all is said and done you want you customers to have a smooth transaction experience, nothing can be worse than getting the sale and your customer having a problem just when they are about to pay.

If you have been thinking about using a web template, there are things that you should know.

First thing to understand is that web site templates are reasonably priced, so if you want to save your self time and money, they are a great way of not doing things from scratch.

The thing about choosing a template is getting one that meets the picture in your mind. Al to often a template is purchased and then you find out its not what you want.

So here some things to think about so you can pick out a good template. The first thing you should do is pick out a template that is not very popular. It is good to use a template that not too many people have so that your website is unique.

If your website is the same as everybody elses it will make you appear less credible. Looking like evey other site will just make you get over looked more easily. Keep in mind though, that the point of using a twemplate is make a few changes like the title and contact details, then your ready to go.

The biggest mistake that you can make is to over customise your template, as that will defeat the purpose of using a temlate in the first place.

But it is okay to change your template if you want it to match up with your theme more closely. For example you could find a template that is about flowers for your gardening site, you may just have to get rid of some flowers in the header.

You could make these minor changes without wasting a whole lot of time and without redesigning the whiole template. Don’t be like the people that choose the wrong template altogether.

Choosing the right template is a personal choice so you have to be careful when selecting one to suit your target audience. It’s not good to choose one just because it looks good. You should a simple easy to edit template.

If you have seen the fancy flash based site? I’m sure you have. Flash based sites are always eye catching, so it is no wonder people are drawn to them.

It is not uncommon to see a vast number of flash sites online. With the advancement in software such as macromedia, flash websites can actually be a practical format for your website now.

The common argument against flash based websites is that they are over lavish and in a lot of cases unnecessary. So its a question of where you draw the line if you are going to use flash. Because of flash’s action scripts they can be very good if you want your visitors to interact with your website.

There are a number programmers that have created interative features with flash, such as feedback forms and also flashe based games. This type of features can have a positive effect on visitors to your site, keeping them coming back.

The good thing about flash is that there is no need to get caught up about what browser the visitor is using, for example Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera. With flash the your website will display the same in all browsers, as long as the vistor has flash installed.

Flash gives you the ability to create the expression that you want you vistor to get of your site, in a more effective way.

Using flash is a lighter alternative to animation because it usese vectors, which are smaller sized files, as opposed to using movie files.

On the other hand you may lose visitors, because inorder for them to view your website they will have to download flash if they don’t have it already. If visitors are unwilling to download flash this may be detrimental.

Another thing to keep in mind when using flash is that you will have to direct visitors to the flash download also, if they don’t have it. And keep in min that if your content is presnted in flash the search engines will not be able to index your content.

So you will not be able to rank well in the search engines, which will result in less traffic, obviously. Its also in your interest to know that web content will take longer to load in flash, as opposed to regular web content. Loading time is important because, your visitors may become frustrated and leave you site.

So the more time it takes for your website to load, the visitors you are going to lose. The best use of flash, is only to use it when it is totally necessary. So its good to use a mixture of flash, HTML and standard text for best results on your website.

It is a good idea to reduce load times on you website, this a great for a number of reasons, not least, because it makes your website use friendly and that is always a bonus. You may or may not be aware, but there are still a number of places that still have dial up, so it is best to have the least amount of images on your site so that it loads quickly with little frustration.

Because there is still a considerable amount of people that have dial up, it is wise to think about them when you are creating a website, the more visitors the better. And the loading speed of your website is likely to be the deciding factor, for dial up users.

For the most part all text on your webasite will load in little to no time, even if a person is using dial up. The main reason for websites loading slowly is the use of large images on the site, so it is good practice to keep these to a minimum, so that the overall loading time is not negatively affected for your visitors.

It is recommended that you take the time to look at your images properly and ensure that the loading time for each one is as fast as possible. There are some softwares that you can use which allow you to get rid of unnecessary info that is on your images. This will hopefully reduced the files size without diminishing the quality of the picture.

If you are using software such as photo shop for you images you are probably familiar with the quality of pictures. For instance photo shop will usually give you the option of saving your JPEG image at different qualities, 8 to 10 is usually good for retaining the quality of a picture and at the same time will save the file small.

If you don’t have access to photoshop, there are other softwares that you can use to compress images and reduce there file size. You can also save images in different file types such as PNG, which can sometimes come out in a smaller file size.

Another image type that you can save your pictures in is GIF. These will usually save your images in a small file size, but is likely to compromise your picture quality, it is up to you to decided how good you want you pictures to look at who the bulk of your visitors will be.

Happy photoshoping!

When building a website it is good practice to have pages that are user friendly to the search engines. It is pointless to build a website unless it has visitors coming to it.

The most popular and usually the best places to get visitors to your site from are the internet search engines, the big three are Google, Yahoo and MSN, altavista is also pretty big too, and there also a number of other search engines

So if you want great success on line designing a search engine friendly website is a good way to attract visitors. The big search engines use what are called robots and spiders or crawlers.

So if you create a website that takes into account the search engines it will be easier to rank, and therefore get a wealth of visitors. Once you have done this properly your web pages will be indexed in the major search engines as quickly as possible.

So what happens is that the spiders will follow links to pages and the record them in their database. The lists will be pulled up when people search their data base. To help with quick indexing you should try not to use frames. These can be confusing to search engine robots, and result in them leaving your site.

You should also keep in mind that frames also make it more difficult for your visitors to bookmark your website. Remember that search engine robots only read text, so presenting information in flash movies may cause it to go unoticed. Its good to provide some text if you are using flash movies so it gets noticed.

It is good practice to use meta tags on your pages, most importantly a good title should be used, one that is related to what you have written about. Meta tags help the search engine spider quickly understand what youer website is about.

If you know anything about web pages, you may be more well advised to use css, because it allows pages to load quicker, than the all so popular HTML tags.

Happy webpage building.

Is it time to redesign your website.

If you run a website, chances are you often wonder whether it is the right time to do a total redesign of the layout of your website. Here are some points to consider: Are you thinking of a redesign just for the sake of it? If you answered yes to that question, it is not yet the right time to do a redesign.

Before you think about designing, you should have in mind why you want a new design, because your design should add value to your site, not take it away. If you are thinking of changing things on your current site, you should remember changing certain parts on your site may cause you to lose some of its original functionality.

But the alternatively if you have had a website that has looked the same for 10 years or more, it is probably the right time to get busy on a new design. Its best to know that people are not leaving your site solely because of it’s old fashioned look.

If you have thought it through and redesigning is some thing you want to do, then here are some more things for you to think about. Basically a redesign to your website is like performing a surgical operation, what that means is the when you regular visitors get to your site they may or may not immediately know its yours.

So there is a potential possibility of losing some of your old customers if they hate your site, or if they mistakenly think they have arrived at the wrong site. A good tip is that you retain the distinct featurea of your old design such as a logo. Or maybe even the same text style for your site.

A great way to make sure that your changes are going to benefit your site and visitors is to do a poll. This will allow you to work out what the visitors actually want from your site, then you can just give it to them.

So you have a website, so who is your target audience? When you know what type of people will be visiting your website, you have done half the work, this info will enhance the productivity of your website. This information will make you have a loyal customer base, which means returning customers who keep coming back for more.

Things to consider about you target audience is their age range, and what kind of people they are. For instance an unknowlegeable person may like a general car site, but someone with more knowledge may want car information tailored to a specific car like a audi. So how knowledgable your customer is can be extremely crucial to the productivity of your site.

It is also a good idea to think about the emotional well being of your audience when building a site. If you audience is people looking for an immediate answer I.e. irritable people, it is well advised to design you site so that they get the answer they are looking for very quickly, after which you can think about selling to them.

Once you have provided your audience with what they want you can then win their trust, which is great way to get some one to buy into what you are offering. The information should be on a par with the web design for added success.

So once you decided whether they are old or young, you should think about the type of information that they are looking for, which may be just the latest trend or solid information. Let’s say fo example you are promoting a computer game, if the information is just set out in a plain ordinary way it may not even get read, so it’s important to marry information with design.

It’s important to make sure your design relates to the topic of your website. Also it maybe good to use the type of language that your audience can relate to for greater effect. Again this will help the audience connect to you and build trust.
